Lost in Translation, or ‘art isn’t what it used to be. ‘
An illustrated talk by Dr. Graham Witham
“Is art no longer concerned with aesthetics? Have ‘meaningful’ ideas and issues become its raison
d’être? Was art ever wholly about aesthetics, anyway?” And in an age when art isn’t what it used to be,
is there a place and role for artists whose work seems not to reect these contemporary shifts in art’s
position? “ These are just some of the big questions posed by Dr. Graham Witham “that ultimately
come down to ”what is art?”

Rediscovering David Jones
A SoCo lecture and workshop given by Rose Miller -
The Beacon, Saturday 28th November 10:00 - 4:00
His name is connected with Eric Gill, Nicholson, Hepworth and Henry Moore; Tate Britain owns 12 of his paintings and drawings, yet how many of us are familiar with him? The publication of In Parenthesis was hailed by T.S. Eliot as 'a work of genius', yet his writing is little known today. In 'reclaiming' David Jones, the artist and writer, I'll be exploring his struggle with some of the dilemmas of representation which retain currency for us today.
The illustrated lecture focuses on visual works and introduces In Parenthesis . The workshop provides opportunities to formulate responses to extracts from the text. Since it was conceived as a radio drama, some form of collaborative dramatic presentation would be welcome. Visual responses could include a reinterpretation of 'clips' from the text or from 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner', one of David Jones' favourite resources.
Morning lecture only: 10am – 12.30pm £10 (£8 SoCo members & concessions)
Full day: 10am - 4pm (lecture & workshop) : £25 (£20 for SoCo members). Includes lunch.

outlining a feast of SoCo events, workshops and exhibitions planned for the next few months - including this year's Coastal Currents Festival!
Members, don't forget to let us know if you are planning any events of your own- especially during Coastal Currents, so that we can let other members know about them.

Secret Postcard Show
The Secret Postcard show was a great success – thanks to all the contributing artists who donated work and supporters who bought work on the day.
Total sales came to £1920 and after deducting costs, we raised £1600.
Funds raised will be used to underpin the costs of our programme of exhibitions, workshops and talks.
We would also like to ring fence a small amount to make a contribution to assist with the development of the SoCo website – to make it more exciting and interactive.
SoCo's web team does not include a web designer, so we are thinking of doing this by offering a student bursary ( Hastings College degree student) early in the autumn term,
with a brief to redesign the site.
If members have any thoughts / ideas about the website and/or what they would like to see included please contact us: socoartists1@btinternet.com
This will help inform our brief and make the most of this opportunity for the benefit of all our members.
Watch out for our latest newsletter, coming soon - with more news and details of exhibitions, events and opportunities for the rest of the year.

Webs and Nets: Contemporary Kimonos
Due to the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response to the Contemporary Kimono installations in WPS and Oak Passage Studio (March 28/29 th , April 2 nd , 4 th and 5 th ) SoCo are increasing the scope of the project in order to perhaps have a larger installation of kimonos early in 2010.
A further workshop has been scheduled on Sunday May 24 th , 10am-4pm at the Beacon, St Mary's Terrace, Hastings
The aim is to enable artists to produce a kimono, whether as wearable garment, soft sculpture or textile hanging using the basic principles of the traditional Japanese kimono; to bring their own practice to the form and to contemporise it.
Sewing skills are not necessary as there is help available. There are some fabrics to use, but you can also incorporate your own (which would add symbolism, personal meaning, memories etc) or construct textiles from scratch.
The workshop has a maximum of 10 artists to allow enough space for working on and looking at these large structure in the round. The cost is £30 (SoCo members £25) and includes a light lunch.
If you are interested in making a kimono and being part of this project please contact Judy Dewsbery: judy@beaconhastings.com for an application form.

SoCo ‘In Conversation'
Thursday 29th January 7- 9 pm
Japanese textiles and the kimono
Robert Mucci shows items from his extensive collection of 19th and 20th century Japanese textiles and garments, in a talk on the history and symbolism, the sensuality and creativity, the workmanship and skill involved in the fabrication. This is a rare opportunity to see these amazing textiles at close quarters. Some of these are ‘museum quality', all are visually splendid.
An example of garments on show: ‘Lozenge Diaper. Stitchwork on hemp. Kogin Type, end of Edo period (1801-1868). The patterns are hand embroidered in white cotton threads on dark blue hemp cloth in a technique which involves crossing of the threads over and under regular numbers of warp and wefts, each motif requiring a specific system of counting. Repetition and combinations of these motifs give rise to a rich variety of design. This coat is Quilted Sashiko method of sewing together one or more layers of textile, sometimes rags, that is strong and warm.
This cloth is embroidery work by women of agricultural villages in Aomori and Akita Prefectures. To ensure a good marriage it is essential for her to learn the Kogin technique. Training began at an early age and by the time of marriage a woman would have woven a number of kimono for herself and her husband to be'.

The contemporary KIMONO :
a SoCo workshop:
Sunday 1st February
10am – 4pm
Based on the concept of the Japanese garment, with its symbolism, geometric cut, its history of customs and rules, its potential for sensuality and storytelling, this workshop offers the exploration of the potential for all of this moving into a contemporary context.
Seen as an object suspended from a horizontal pole, the outside surface is open to decoration, elimination or expression, the interior there for discovery.
Worn on a body, moving, softening the geometry into curves and folds, the kimono becomes the expression of the wearer, enhances them or perhaps eclipses the wearer altogether.
The workshop will provide basic shapes on which to draw, paint, glue, cut or sew so bring paint, anything to add or sew on etc. to build ideas. This conceptual stage may be as far as you want to go.
Bring your own fabric if you wish to work with something in particular. This isn't a dyeing or embroidery workshop. There are sewing machines and people to help you to sew if required.
Remember there are only 5 hours in this workshop.
£25 for SoCo members, £30 for non-members, the price includes refreshments, light lunch and a VERY basic kimono in a flat form.
Booking is essential as places are limited. Please phone Judy on 01424 431305 or email judy@beaconhastings.com to book or for more information on either of these events.

Conversations
something experimental ……
SoCo artists are invited to pair up with another artist (not necessarily a member of SoCo), to exhibit work stimulated by a ‘conversation'.
There are no rules other than the exhibited work should reflect a dialogue that took place between the artists - anywhere, anytime, anyhow! Perhaps the present In Conversation talks and creative workshops could spark off a ‘conversation' - or any ongoing work that you're developing. Recent or previous work, notes, correspondence, influences / starting points can also be included.
A two week exhibition at the Beacon from 25 July to 8 August is planned. Artists will have app 3m x 2m wall space allocated between them (3d work – floor space by arrangement) and should be available to chat about their work during an informal late breakfast event during the exhibition period.
Conversations could result in a collaborative piece of work or be influential in creating new work that extends beyond the scope and time frame of this project.
There will be a small submission fee of £5 per artist which will contribute to costs. Work that is for sale will be subject to 25% commission.
Expressions of interest please to c.jackson811@btinternet.com or tel 01424 423194 by May 24th.
There will be a chance for interested artists to meet and talk at Oak Passage Studio on Saturday 31st May at 11am.

There will be an additional £5 charge per person on the day for materials
(cotton, silk and dyes)
This experimental workshop will explore traditional resist techniques on paper and cloth using hot wax, (batik) and Japanese Shibori (meaning to literally wring, squeeze or press) By using either of these methods to form a resist to colour, the material is then painted or dipped into a dye or indigo bath. When the resist is untied, unfolded or unwaxed, an image is created which can be abstract, patterned or pictorial.
When using shibori, a 2D piece of material is transformed into a 3D form by using various methods such as stitching and gathering, binding, folding, twisting and clamping. The results after dyeing can be very unexpected and exciting.
Cotton and silk, dyes and tools for batik and shibori will be provided.
TO BRING:
1 Anything that could be used with hot wax to create interesting textures, shapes or lines – eg metal stamps, forks, nails wood etc
2 If you have any particular natural fabric – the finer the better, or paper that you would like to experiment with, do bring too.
3 Notebook and pen
4 Apron and rubber gloves – indigo is very messy !
5 Newspaper and plastic bags to carry wet fabric away with
6 Pegs and small sharp scissors

IN CONVERSATION : “WEBS AND NETS”
Oak Passage Studios
8th May 6 – 7.30 pm.
Our next event will be led by Penny Precious and will explore the diverse potentials of textile art. Panellists include: Lorna Dallas-Conte, Jean Davey Winter, Susan Collins, Josephine Ho, and themes to be discussed will include the boundaries between traditional textile and fine art textiles; cultural metaphors that cloth and thread carry, referencing the title Webs and Nets; and the influence of travel, globalism and new technology on textile practices, beyond the merely decorative. Penny will focus on the ‘networking' and webbing' process of textile history and working, which has shifted from the home spun domestic to be incorporated into fine art practice.
This panel talk will lead to a major Touring Textiles Exhibition in 2009, and Soco will hold related workshops and talks, starting with a workshop on June 22 led by Josephine Ho on textile colouring
To reserve a place for May 8th, please email: gl@gracelau.plus.com <mailto:gl@gracelau.plus.com> no later than May 3rd. Due to limited space at Oak Passage, early booking is essential.
