Landmarks 6

Somewhere between landscape and map this series of paintings is inspired by photographs taken on flights. The higher the viewpoint the more abstfact and map-like the image. this also provides increased awareness of the delicate balance between man and the environment, giving an overview of the imposed geometry of transport, urbanisation and agriculture upon the natural features of the land. See flyer attachment below.

Art in Empty Shops, Kings Road and London Road, January 2013

Image

Image             Image

32E Kings Road and Castle Dry Cleaners, London Road

The Art in Empty Shops project is up and running successfully with two empty shops in St Leonards now showcasing SoCo artists’ work in their windows.

The two shops have very different frontages and the challenge has been to choose the right artists and create the design/artwork to fit the window spaces and enhance the immediate surroundings. So 32E Kings Road focuses on abstraction, colour, strong textural qualities, which can be enjoyed close up by people walking by. Four artists are featured here: Harry Snook, Carly Ralph, Paul Bartholomew and Sinéid Codd.

Castle Dry Cleaners, round the corner in the London Road has, by contrast, less footfall but there is a bus stop and Christ Church opposite. The theme here is portraiture, portraits with an ‘edge’, powerful and intriguing individual images which work extremely well both close up and from across the busy road. The artists featured here are Bob Mazzer with Charlotte Snook, Eugene Palmer and Roz Cran.

This project is a partnership between Hastings Borough Council, the letting agents Dyer and Hobbis and SoCo Artists.

We do hope you have had a chance to see the windows.

And we expect new windows to be available soon….

‘Superb. Really enjoyed!!’

‘Wonderful thought provoking work, inspired and moving.’

The Stade Hall continues to be an excellent venue for SoCo, attracting a wide and varied audience. It was good to see the number of children and young people who visited, some of whom returned for a second time.

As an important part of the exhibition programme, excellent talks were given by exhibitors Jean Davey Winter and Alex Leadbeater about their work and careers. Rose Miller ran a very successful writing workshop, which she has reviewed on the SoCo Workshops page of the website.

MAKING WAVES IN THE ART WORLD
The spring exhibition by South Coast Artists (SoCo) Making Waves, confirmes the importance of Hastings & St.Leonards artists and celebrates the vital contribution that they make to life on the South Coast.
Work in the exhibition has been selected from members' submissions, which have been newly created to mark the event.  Alongside the exhibition, there is a programme of talks and workshops.
On Wednesday April 18 at 6pm. Alex Leadbeater will give a talk entitled 'The Tide is Turning'.  She will talk about her recent paintings and prints, and how living by the sea and in Hastings has changed her work, and also her outlook.
On Saturday April 21, artist Rose Miller will lead a Writing workshop centred on pieces in the exhibition.
This will take place from 2pm to 4pm, and admission is free.  Both events are at Stade Hall.
